What is Shipwreck Bay?

The name “Shipwreck Bay” comes from the wreck of the ship Panagiotis, which lies in the middle of the beach - the vessel ran aground here in 1980 during a storm. According to official information, the ship was transporting illegal cargo of cigarettes and alcohol, and its crew was trying to escape from the Greek coast guard. Strong winds and high waves made further navigation impossible, and the ship was driven ashore.

Over time, the shipwreck in Zakynthos became a symbol of the island and one of the most frequently photographed places in the area. Local legends have also grown around the events of the 1980s - some claim the ship was part of a larger smuggling network, others speak of a mysterious cargo that was never found. The true story remains unknown, but one thing is certain: it was the wreck that brought worldwide fame to this once unknown bay and made it a symbol of Zakynthos.

How to get to Navagio Beach? Can you see the shipwreck in Zakynthos?

Shipwreck Bay is located on the western coast of the island and, for many years, was accessible only from the sea. Today, the situation is different, but there are still several ways to see this legendary place.

The most popular option is a boat trip to Navagio Beach, organised from places such as Porto Limnionas, Porto Roxa, Agios Nikolaos, or the island’s capital, Zakynthos Town. Routes vary in length and program, but almost all include approaching the beach itself and the opportunity to see the wreck.

An alternative, and at the same time very spectacular, option is the viewpoints overlooking Shipwreck Bay from the cliffs above the beach. Access by car or scooter leads through the island's mountainous part, and on-site viewing platforms offer postcard-like views. From above, you cannot access the beach, but you can admire it in its full beauty.

Excursions to Navagio Beach are often combined with exploring other attractions of the northern and western coast of Zakynthos. The route usually leads towards Cape Skinari and the Blue Caves, where you can swim in crystal-clear water, as well as to Xigia Beach, known for its natural sulfur springs.

Why is Shipwreck Bay closed?

Navagio Beach is closed to tourists mainly for safety reasons. The cause is the risk of landslides from the steep limestone cliffs surrounding the bay, as well as the ship's deteriorating condition.

Greek authorities decided to temporarily close the area, a decision that has been extended, to prevent accidents and preserve the historic wreck in good condition. This means that, currently, it is not possible to go down to the beach or walk freely near the wreck.

Despite this, Shipwreck Bay remains one of the island’s biggest attractions. Visitors can admire it from the decks of boats (without going ashore) and from viewpoints on the cliffs.

Although not being able to access the beach can be disappointing, the view of Shipwreck Bay, even from a distance, is still breathtaking and remains a must-see when visiting Zakynthos.

Interesting facts about Navagio Beach

Navagio Beach is not only spectacular scenery - behind its name lies a fascinating story that attracts travellers from all over the world. The central point of the bay is the wreck of the ship MV Panagiotis, which has been resting here since October 1980, after running aground on the beach between steep cliffs during a storm and poor visibility.

The ship was built in Scotland in 1937, and in the 1970s, it was already operating under the name Panagiotis. Many stories have grown up around its final voyage - the most popular says it was carrying contraband (including cigarettes), and that its crew fled from the Greek coast guard, abandoning the vessel, which ultimately ran aground.

Although the wreck is not traditionally secured or preserved, its presence has made the bay world-famous, and it regularly appears on lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world, attracting both photography enthusiasts and fans of maritime legends.
