Program Description

Get ready for a fascinating journey back in time to the Neolithic era. Depart from London and discover two remarkable prehistoric landmarks - the world-famous Stonehenge and the lesser-known but even larger Avebury.

During this full-day excursion, you’ll uncover the stories and legends behind these mysterious monuments, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of ancient rituals, and feel the energy that has drawn travelers here for centuries.

Early in the morning, you’ll leave London and travel by coach westward to the county of Wiltshire. The first stop is West Kennet Long Barrow - one of the largest Neolithic burial sites in Britain, dating back over 5,000 years old. A gentle walk through the hillside takes you to the ancient burial chambers, where your guide will bring the beliefs and customs of our ancestors to life. From here, you can also admire Silbury Hill, a massive man-made mound whose mysterious purpose remains unknown, often compared to the great pyramids of Egypt.

Next, you’ll arrive in Avebury, a charming medieval village surrounded by the largest stone circle in the world. The stones here are so vast that an entire village lies within them! You’ll join your guide for a short walking tour and then have some free time to explore on your own. Feeling hungry? Stop by the famous Red Lion Pub, said to be haunted and steeped in local legends.

The highlight of the day awaits at Stonehenge - one of Britain’s most iconic landmarks and a valid symbol of its prehistoric past. As you stroll among the towering stones, you’ll learn about the many theories surrounding their origin: from astronomical observatories to ancient ceremonial sites. With an included audio guide (subject to availability), you can explore this awe-inspiring monument at your own pace.

After a day filled with discoveries and unforgettable sights, you’ll return to London by coach. The tour ends with 2-3 drop-off points in central London (exact locations depend on traffic conditions and will be announced by your guide).

The order of visits and itinerary may be subject to change.

Important info

Please note: In the event of bad weather on the day of the tour, the visit to West Kennet Long Barrow may not take place- as it is quite a walk - and would be unpleasant in heavy rain conditions. Your tour manager will advise on the day but please make sure you wear good walking shoes or boots on this tour.
