Program Description

An inspiring journey into the world of minerals and gemstones awaits you, where you can see the wonders of the Earth up close and discover how some of the planet’s most precious treasures are formed.

The Geology and Mineralogy Gallery is part of the National Museum of Natural History and is located in the atmospheric Jardin des Plantes. From the very first steps, you will be surrounded by an extraordinary collection of crystals, minerals and gemstones from all over the world. You will admire nearly 600 unique specimens, including 20 giant crystals that impress with their size and natural beauty.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is massive blocks of quartz weighing several tons, as well as impressive amethyst geodes filled with thousands of tiny crystals. You will learn where they come from and how they arrived at the museum - their story leads all the way to Brazil and discoveries made in the 1980s. A special film presentation helps you better understand this fascinating journey.

This experience is not only about nature. During your visit, you will also see remarkable royal jewels that once dazzled European courts. Among them are the magnificent sapphire of Louis XIV, the impressive opal of Charles X, and a unique diamond-inlaid snuff box that belonged to Alexander I.

You will also discover what a mineral really is and how it is formed. This is a great opportunity to broaden your knowledge and look at gemstones not only as ornaments, but as the result of millions of years of geological processes. Altogether, this creates a cohesive and inspiring experience that will delight both adults and younger explorers.
