Out towards the central mountain range, the road leads to Pico do Arieiro, the third highest peak of the island, which offers magnificent views on a clear day. Then to Ribeiro Frio, where you can visit the trout hatchery and enjoy a short leisurely walk to Balcões. Descend through Faial to the village of Santana, famous for the traditional houses with thatched roofs and densely planted vineyards. Here you are offered the opportunity to visit the vineyards of“Quinta do Furão”, where a three course lunch will be served. The afternoon takes you past Porto da Cruz and up to Portela for wonderful views of the island, then off to visit the village of Machico, the original capital of the island, hidden in the bay and stretching out over the hillsides, before your return to Funchal.
