Program Description

Step into the world of Gothic architecture, where every detail reflects the centuries-old history of this remarkable place. Dating back to the 13th century, the cathedral is an important part of Catalan heritage and has played a significant religious role for generations.

Among the cathedral’s most valuable features are its cloisters, which date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Renowned craftsmen contributed to their creation, including architect Andrés Escuder and sculptor Antonio Claperós. Your visit will begin at the exterior entrances of Piety and Saint Eulalia, leading you into a part of the cathedral filled with historic details.

One feature that particularly stands out is the Romanesque white marble portal, which connects the cathedral with the cloisters. Decorated with geometric motifs and a Gothic pediment, it may date back to an earlier Romanesque church. This remarkable detail shows how different architectural periods and styles come together in one place.

As you walk through the four galleries of the cloisters, you will see arches supported by solid pillars and admire their detailed decoration. The reliefs depict scenes from the Old Testament as well as images connected with the legend of the Holy Cross. Remember to look up at the vaulted ceilings, where the keystones are decorated with stone carvings depicting scenes from the New Testament. With so many details to discover, a walk through the cathedral becomes more than an encounter with architecture - it is also a story told in stone.
