If you enjoy mountain trekking and don’t mind heights, this excursion is the perfect choice for you!
The history of the Caminito del Rey (the King’s Path) dates back to the early 20th century. It was initially built in the Gaitanejo and El Chorro gorge to facilitate the transport of materials and allow workers to access the hydroelectric plant. In 1921, King Alfonso XIII of Spain walked the path from the Conde de Guadalhorce Dam to Ardales to celebrate the completion of this significant project. You’ll now follow almost the same route with your guide.
Today, after extensive restoration and new safety measures, the trail is open to all who want to experience an unforgettable hike through dramatic rock formations and breathtaking scenery. The route runs about 100 meters above the ground, along the limestone cliffs of the Guadalhorce River Gorge in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Park. Highlights include hanging bridge and wooden walkway attached to the cliffs, at times suspended above sheer drops. Some surrounding rock walls rise to 700 meters!
After completing the route, the day ends with a visit to the charming town of Ardales, with its whitewashed houses, castle ruins, and historic church. You’ll also have some free time to stroll, take photos, or relax in one of the local cafés.
This excursion combines adventure, history, and nature, with every step bringing new wonders.
