Program Description
You don’t have to travel the world to see just how different life beneath the surface can be. At the Gijón Aquarium, you can go from the Cantabrian coast to the Caribbean, the Red Sea and distant oceans all in one visit.
This is more than just a collection of aquariums. 60 tanks recreate 12 different ecosystems, each showcasing a distinct environment and its inhabitants. More than 2 million litres of water help recreate conditions found in rivers, seas and oceans from different parts of the world.
One look is enough to see just how different these inhabitants can be. Salmon and sturgeon represent the world of freshwater, while moray eels, rays and sharks offer a glimpse into life beneath the surface of the sea. They are just a few of the approximately 400 species and 4,000 animals waiting to be seen.
Moving through the different ecosystems reveals more than just the diversity of species. The landscapes, conditions and ways in which entire environments function change, along with the animals that live in them. This allows you to see the difference between the local waters of Cantabria and much warmer, more distant parts of the world.
The Gijón Aquarium offers a glimpse into a vast range of aquatic environments - from those found close to Spain to those thousands of kilometres away. One visit is enough to see their incredible diversity and appreciate just how much life exists beneath the surface.
