Program Description

One place has a history dating back to around 1000 BC. The other was shaped by nature over thousands of years, drop by drop. On this trip, you’ll discover Almuñécar, founded by the Phoenicians, explore the coastal town of Nerja and then enter the Nerja Caves - vast underground spaces where nature has created formations among the tallest of their kind in the world.

Almuñécar is one of the oldest places on the Costa del Sol. Its history dates back to around 1000 BC, when the Phoenicians founded a settlement here. The town’s character is shaped by its setting on the Mediterranean, as well as landmarks such as Majuelo Park and the Castle of San Miguel, which towers above the surrounding area. Here, you can experience how its ancient heritage blends with the everyday life of a coastal town.

Next comes Nerja, one of the most distinctive towns along this stretch of the Costa del Sol. You’ll have time to explore and enjoy a lunch featuring local specialities before heading towards the main attraction of the trip.

The Nerja Caves open up a vast world of natural chambers shaped by nature over thousands of years. Stalactites and stalagmites form remarkable shapes, with some of the formations among the tallest of their kind in the world. As you walk through the underground spaces, you’ll discover a landscape that has been shaped in a completely different way from everything you have seen above ground.

The caves also have archaeological significance and form part of Spain’s historic heritage. Their importance therefore goes beyond their impressive rock formations - they are also a place where you can discover a glimpse of the region’s distant past.

From Phoenician Almuñécar, through coastal Nerja, to the monumental interiors of the Nerja Caves - this trip brings together history, local character and an extraordinary work of nature. In a single day, you’ll see what people have created over thousands of years and what nature has been shaping for even longer.
