Program Description
Imagine a Spain where a Roman aqueduct still defines the cityscape, a castle looks as if it has been taken straight from a fairytale, and the historic centre is surrounded by imposing walls. This is what awaits you on a trip to Segovia and Ávila - two cities where remarkable landmarks remain part of everyday life.
In Segovia, you will begin your guided walking tour at the famous Roman aqueduct. Its monumental arches are one of the city's most recognisable symbols and immediately reveal just how far back its history reaches. From here, you will continue towards the historic centre, where you will see the Gothic Cathedral of Santa María, Plaza Mayor and the Canaleja viewpoint.
The next stop will be the Alcázar of Segovia - one of those castles that is difficult to mistake for any other. Its slender towers and position above the city give it an almost fairytale appearance. During your visit, you will see a landmark that was closely connected with the history of Spanish monarchs for centuries.
You will then travel to Ávila, where the scenery changes completely. The city is surrounded by impressive medieval walls, which remain one of its most distinctive features. As you walk through the historic centre, you will see how its defensive character shaped the city and its architecture.
In Ávila, you will also discover the Gothic Cathedral, Romanesque Basilica of San Vicente, Plaza del Mercado Chico and the Baroque Convent Church of Santa Teresa. Each of these places adds something different to the city - from monumental religious architecture to the intimate character of one of its historic squares.
Segovia and Ávila show how different eras can come together in a single day - from the Roman aqueduct, through the royal Alcázar, to the medieval walls. This variety makes the journey from Madrid more than simply a visit to two historic cities.
