The history of the city and region of Kayseri dates back to ancient times, when it was known as the Christian metropolis of Caesarea Cappadocia and the seat of Bishop Basil the Great. Situated on the Silk Road, Kayseri was a powerful and rich city. The region is still a lot of monuments from the times of the Seljuk Turks and Ottomans and the huge underground cities, serving the first Christians as a shelter in times of persecution. A visit to the most important sites, including the Hunat Hatun Külliye mosque complex, the Gevher Nesibe Hatun Madrasa hospital building and the Great Bazaar built in the 12th century.
