Program Description
Sovereign Hill is a unique open-air museum that takes you back to the days of Australia’s gold rush. Gold was discovered in Ballarat in 1851, sparking one of the greatest alluvial gold rushes in history and transforming a small pastoral settlement into a thriving regional city.
Set across 15 hectares of a former gold-mining site, Sovereign Hill recreates the atmosphere of a bustling 19th-century township. Meet costumed interpreters, see working machinery and traditional trades, and discover what everyday life was like in Ballarat during the gold rush era.
More than 18 scheduled activities and demonstrations take place throughout the day. Try your hand at panning for real gold, watch a musket-firing demonstration, and see traditional crafts in action, including the making of boiled lollies, candles and wheels.
