Program Description

Discover the fascinating underground world of the Hallein Salt Mines near Salzburg. Ride an original mining train, slide down wooden miners’ slides and cross an underground salt lake by raft. You will also learn about the history of salt, once known as “white gold”.

During your visit to the salt mines, your guide will lead you through the old underground tunnels and introduce you to the history of salt mining in the region.

You will ride the original mining train before sliding down wooden miners’ slides once used by the workers. You will then cross an underground salt lake by raft and see a section of the mine covered with salt crystals.

Discover why salt was known as “white gold” and learn about its importance to the development of the region. You will also learn about the early salt mining carried out by the Celts and how income from salt helped Salzburg’s Prince-Archbishops finance grand buildings.

The temperature inside the mine is low, so remember to dress warmly. A white miner’s suit will also be provided for you to wear during the tour.

After the tour, you can visit the Salzwelten shop, where you will find salt-themed souvenirs.

The order of sightseeing and the programme may change.
