Program Description
Lanzarote is home to a place where people have been harnessing the power of nature to produce salt for over a century. Salinas de Janubio is the largest salt flats complex in the Canary Islands and an important part of the island's history and landscape. During a guided walk, you will learn about the salt production process and discover how volcanic activity contributed to the formation of this remarkable site.
Janubio Salt Flats are an example of how people and nature have worked together over time. Their distinctive landscape has been shaped by volcanic eruptions in the Timanfaya area, seawater and generations of local salt producers. During the guided tour, you will learn about the history of the site and find out why salt production played such an important role in the lives of Lanzarote's residents.
As you walk among the salt evaporation ponds, you will see how sea salt is produced and how traditional harvesting methods make use of the island's natural conditions. You will also have the chance to admire the landscape, where the contrasting colours of the ponds create a striking mosaic against the volcanic surroundings.
The tour concludes with a visit to Bodega de la Sal, where you will enjoy a tasting of Flor de Sal, delicate salt crystals collected from the water's surface, along with products from the Flavours of Janubio range. You will discover just how varied the flavours of salt from this part of Lanzarote can be.
The order of visits and the programme are subject to change.
