Program Description
A full-day trip from Bogotá takes you to two places of great historical and cultural importance to the region - Zipaquirá and Guatavita. The programme combines a visit to an extraordinary church built inside a former salt mine with an introduction to local traditions and stories connected with the legend of El Dorado.
The first stop is the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, located around 180 metres underground inside a halite mountain. The church was created within the tunnels of a former salt mine and combines religious elements with the distinctive setting of underground passageways.
The route then continues to Guatavita, home to a natural park associated with local heritage and the history of indigenous communities. This area is closely linked to the famous legend of El Dorado, which captured the imagination of travellers and treasure hunters for centuries.
The tour presents the area surrounding Bogotá from two different perspectives, through the underground heritage of Zipaquirá and the landscapes and traditions of Guatavita. The programme brings together history, culture, nature and the influences that have shaped the region.
The order of visits and programme may be subject to change.
