Program Description
Set off early in the morning from your hotel to Alexandria, a historic Mediterranean city founded by Alexander the Great. During the tour, discover some of the city's most important landmarks and learn about its rich history.
Your first stop will be the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, discovered in 1900. The name means “Mound of Shards” and refers to fragments of vessels left after feasts near the tombs. You will then see the famous Pompey's Pillar from the outside. Made of pink granite, the column was erected around 300 AD in honour of Emperor Diocletian and is one of Alexandria's most recognisable landmarks.
Next, visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This impressive cultural complex pays tribute to the ancient Library of Alexandria, once one of the most important centres of knowledge in the ancient world. During your approximately one-hour visit, learn about its history and explore the available areas of the complex.
The tour continues with a visit to the Greco-Roman Museum, whose collection showcases Alexandria's heritage from the Greek and Roman periods. See sculptures, mosaics, pottery and coins while learning more about daily life, art and architecture during this period.
You will then head to the Qaitbay Citadel, a 15th-century fortress located on the Mediterranean coast. It was built on the site of the former Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the wonders of the ancient world. During an approximately 30-minute stop, you will see the citadel from the outside and have time to admire the views over the Mediterranean Sea.
The programme also includes lunch, after which you will begin your return journey to your hotel.
