Program Description

Explore the highlights of Athens on a full-day guided tour combining ancient landmarks, the city's history and scenic coastal landscapes. It's a great choice for first-time visitors who want to experience Athens' key sights and venture beyond the city to Cape Sounio.

Start with a drive past some of central Athens' most important landmarks. See the Panathenaic Stadium, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Zappeion and the Athens Trilogy – the University of Athens, the Academy of Athens and the National Library. The route also takes you past the National Garden, Hadrian's Arch, the Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Syntagma Square before reaching the Acropolis.

Next, visit the Acropolis Museum, where you'll explore a rich collection of artefacts connected with the history of the Acropolis. Highlights include Archaic-period statues, the Caryatids and elements of the Parthenon's decoration, including its metopes, pediments and frieze.

After a lunch break at a local restaurant beneath the Acropolis, continue along the coast and enjoy views of the Saronic Gulf. Your destination is Cape Sounio, home to the impressive Temple of Poseidon, perched on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. Your archaeologist guide will share fascinating stories about this ancient site.

At the archaeological site, you'll have time to explore the remains of the temple independently and take in the views of the Aegean Sea. Then return to Athens after a full day combining history, culture and spectacular scenery.

The order of the itinerary and the programme may be subject to change.
