Program Description

Not everyone could once cross the threshold of this place. For centuries, life behind its doors revolved around the Brotherhood of Black Heads, a society of unmarried merchants, shipowners and foreigners. Today, its doors are open to you - step inside and discover the story of a brotherhood whose origins date back to the Middle Ages.

The interiors quickly reveal that this was no ordinary meeting place. Crystal chandeliers, colourful stained-glass windows, red carpets and richly decorated halls evoke the world of the brotherhood’s wealthy members. From the grand rooms, you’ll also descend underground to explore more hidden corners of the former headquarters.

Behind the lavish interiors lies the story of the people who were connected to this place for centuries. You’ll learn more about the lives of the members of the Brotherhood of Black Heads, their links to trade and shipping, and the role they played in old Riga. Their stories help reveal what this house was like long before it became one of the attractions of the Old Town.

The building itself also has a remarkable history. The original house, whose origins date back to 1334, was destroyed in the 20th century. The House of the Black Heads was rebuilt between 1996 and 1999, restoring to Riga a place connected to the city’s history for centuries.

There is much more behind the ornate façade than beautiful interiors. This is a story of a brotherhood, wealthy merchants and a place that, despite its complex history, once again became part of Riga’s Old Town. Today, you can cross its threshold and discover that story from the inside.
