Program Description

Ponta de São Lourenço walk runs along the eastern and most beautiful peninsula of Madeira Island. The harsh, almost totally deserted coastline makes the walk one of the most popular and spectacular in Madeira. This walk provides a sharp contrast with the lush, evergreen Levada paths. The Ponta de São Lourenço is classified as a partial natural reserve and part of the European network of important community sites – Natura 2000. Named after the explorer Zarco´s ship the “São Lourenço”, this peninsula is linked underwater to the Desertas Island. The walk will reward you with many unique plants, in all about 140 species, 31 that are exclusive of Madeira Island. This walk is regarded as a medium difficulty level. At the beginning it seems to be very easy…wooden steps, footbridges… what can be difficult here? As far as the comfortable steps finish, the route leads through steep slopes. That is why you should be cautious. Along the way you will be amazed by fantastic sceneries, with the Deserted Islands in the south and the Porto Santo island in the north (if the weather permits). From this walk is possible to see the northern and southern coasts of Madeira Island. Walking to the far end of the peninsula we find the “Cais do Sardinha”, support to the rangers of the Natural Park of Madeira. It is the only place where you can enjoy some shadow of beautiful palm trees. During the summer we will recommend you bring your bathing suit to swim in our crystal clear water. Additionally, during this walk, you will have a wonderful opportunity to observe planes descending to the airport. After a few minutes of rest, we return by the same path to the end but before that, we will have the possibility to visit a wonderful viewpoint with stunning views!

Remember to be prepared for different atmospheric conditions: wind, sun, rain. Along the way, it is almost impossible to find shadow, so don’t forget to take sun cream and a hat and a swimming suite. As it is a deserted area, you might experience very strong wind. Get prepared for the unpredictable weather … and the unrepeatable experience!

Distance: approx. 8 km, trekking time: approx. 4 hours, difficulty level: medium.
